Modalidade importada dos Estados Unidos inaugura primeiras quadras gratuitas na cidade.
Um novo esporte tem ganhado cada vez mais espaço em São Paulo, o pickleball –pronuncia-se picoubóu. Ele conquistou principalmente pessoas de maior poder aquisitivo, e agora se esforça para atrair mais seguidores. São mais de 50 quadras pela capital.
Mas como a modalidade funciona? Bem, ela é, de maneira simplificada, um pingue-pongue ampliado. Para jogar, basta uma bolinha de plástico (bem leve), raquetes (que lembram as de frescobol, mas retangulares) e uma quadra muito semelhante à de badminton (13,4 m x 6,10 m), dividida por uma rede de tênis.
O objetivo é passar a bola por cima da rede e fazer com que o oponente não consiga devolvê-la. Ela pode pingar uma vez em cada lado antes de ser rebatida. Vence quem primeiro acumular 11 pontos e uma diferença de dois pontos a seu favor. As partidas podem ocorrer mano a mano ou em duplas, sem separação por gênero.
Seu nome, diz a lenda, vem de Pickles, nome do cachorro do criador, Joel Pritchard, que foi deputado pelo Partido Republicano. Ele teria pensado na prática para entreter suas filhas, e o pet acabado como maior entusiasta, perseguindo as bolinhas.
A US Pickleball, confederação americana do esporte, afirma que houve um aumento de 43% no número de associados somente em 2021, indo a 53 mil. A maioria dos adeptos tem mais de 40 anos.
Tal fenômeno, segundo José Eduardo Guilger, 66, acontece porque “essa modalidade é muito democrática” ao não exigir grandes deslocamentos numa quadra relativamente pequena e possuir um ritmo mais lento pela leveza dos equipamentos.
Guilger é um dos responsáveis por difundir o pickleball no Brasil. Ele conheceu o jogo em 2019, quando morou nos EUA. Voltando a São Paulo dois anos depois, trouxe alguns kits para praticá-lo por aqui.
O endereço escolhido para isso foi o parque Ibirapuera, na zona sul paulistana. Ele montou uma quadra improvisada e começou a recrutar parceiros, muitos deles praticantes de beach tennis.
“É melhor jogar em quadra dura, né? A areia cansa e desgasta muito mais”, diz Guilguer. Ele também explica que o aprendizado do pickleball é muito mais fácil comparado a outros esportes. “Em uma hora de treino, você entra num torneio. Não é brincadeira.”
Rapidamente, a prática virou tradicional no Ibirapuera e foi dominando outros espaços. Há quadras em locais como Club Athlético Paulistano, Monte Líbano, Clube de Campo de São Paulo, Círculo Militar e Sesi Vila Leopoldina, onde ocorreu o primeiro campeonato brasileiro, em maio e junho deste ano.
Paulo André de Moraes, presidente da Confederação Brasileira de Pickleball –criada em fevereiro–, conta que a competição teve mais de 400 inscritos em 16 categorias, da infantil à 60+.
Aproveitando essa onda, Guilger, também abriu a primeira academia focada no esporte na cidade, a Pickleball Point Arena, em 2023. O local, na Chácara Santo Antônio (zona sul), é frequentado por dezenas de alunos diariamente. A maioria conheceu a modalidade em excursões à América do Norte. Eles desembolsam até R$ 200 por uma hora de aula.
Uma dessas pessoas é Fernanda Jubran, mandatária da Federação Paulista de Pickleball, registrada oficialmente em janeiro deste ano. Advogada, ela se apaixonou pelo esporte, contagiou seu pai, marido e filho, e faz da entidade um meio de propagá-lo. A federação tem parcerias com escolas privadas para o desenvolvimento de aulas e faz a qualificação de treinadores.
“Meu sonho é ver quadras em todos os cantos da capital e de outras cidades do estado, como ocorre nos Estados Unidos, e pessoas de todas as classes jogando”, diz Jubran. Esse é o mesmo desejo da confederação brasileira, afirma o presidente Paulo André. A primeira semente já foi plantada por ele.
No início deste mês, foi inaugurado um espaço para prática de pickleball no Ceret (Centro Esportivo, Recreativo e Educativo do Trabalhador), na zona leste de São Paulo. Lá, são oferecidas aulas gratuitas durante toda a semana, numa parceria entre a prefeitura e a confederação. Para participar, porém, é necessário paciência. A fila de espera possui mais de cem nomes.
